What is Gun Milan?
Gun Milan (also written as Guna Milan or Gun Milaan) is a Vedic astrology method for checking marriage compatibility. It is the same as Ashtakoot Milan, "Ashta" meaning eight and "Koota" meaning category.
The system evaluates 8 aspects of compatibility between two people's birth charts, with each aspect carrying a specific number of points. The maximum total is 36 gunas (points). The actual score your match receives tells you how compatible the two charts are.
The entire system is based on the Moon's nakshatra (birth star) in both horoscopes, because in Vedic astrology, the Moon represents the mind, emotions, and inner nature of a person.
The 8 Kootas: All 36 Gunas Explained
Here is the complete breakdown of every koota, what it measures, its maximum points, and how points are awarded:
1. Varna Koota (1 Point)
What it measures: Spiritual compatibility and the alignment of life goals.
In this system, all 27 nakshatras are categorized into 4 varnas:
- Brahmin: spiritual, intellectual
- Kshatriya: ambitious, protective
- Vaishya: business-minded, practical
- Shudra: service-oriented, grounded
Scoring: The boy's varna should be equal to or higher than the girl's for a full 1 point. If the girl's varna is higher, 0 points are awarded. This koota has the lowest weight in the system.
2. Vashya Koota (2 Points)
What it measures: Natural attraction, dominance, and the power dynamic between partners.
Each Moon sign belongs to one of 5 Vashya categories: Chatushpad (quadruped), Dwipad (biped), Jalchar (water), Vanchar (forest), and Keet (insect).
Scoring:
- If both signs have mutual Vashya: 2 points
- If one sign has Vashya over the other: 1 point
- No Vashya relationship: 0 points
3. Tara Koota (3 Points)
What it measures: The health, longevity, and fortune compatibility between partners.
This is calculated by counting from the girl's birth nakshatra to the boy's birth nakshatra (and vice versa), then dividing by 9. The remainder determines the Tara type.
There are 9 Tara types: Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kshema, Pratyak, Sadhana, Naidhana, Mitra, and Parama Mitra.

- Auspicious Tara for both: 3 points

4. Yoni Koota (4 Points)
What it measures: Physical affinity, intimate compatibility, and mutual attraction.
Each of the 27 nakshatras is associated with an animal. There are 14 animals in the system (each appearing twice across 27 nakshatras). The compatibility between the boy's and girl's animal symbols determines the score.
Animals can be: friendly, neutral, or enemy to each other.

- Same animal (same sex): 4 points
- Same animal (opposite sex): 3 points
- Friendly animals: 2 points
- Neutral animals: 1 point

5. Graha Maitri Koota (5 Points)
What it measures: Mental compatibility, mutual respect, and intellectual harmony.
This compares the ruling planets (lords) of the boy's and girl's Moon signs. The relationship between these planets, whether they are friends, neutrals, or enemies, determines the score.
Scoring:
- Both lords are mutual friends: 5 points
- One is a friend, the other neutral: 4 points
- Both are neutral: 3 points
- One friend, one enemy: 2 points
- One neutral, one enemy: 1 point
- Mutual enemies: 0 points
Why this matters: Graha Maitri directly reflects how well the minds of two people will sync. A couple with 5 points here will naturally understand each other; 0 points can mean persistent misunderstandings.
6. Gana Koota (6 Points)
What it measures: Temperament, behaviour, and character compatibility.
Every nakshatra belongs to one of three Ganas:
- Deva Gana (divine): gentle, spiritual, cooperative
- Manav Gana (human): balanced, practical, adaptable
- Rakshasa Gana (fierce): intense, independent, strong-willed
Scoring:
- Same Gana: 6 points
- Deva boy + Manav girl (or vice versa): 5 points
- Manav boy + Rakshasa girl: 1 point
- Deva boy + Rakshasa girl: 0 points (can indicate serious temperament clashes)
The Deva-Rakshasa combination scoring 0 is one of the most discussed issues in Gun Milan. It doesn't mean the marriage won't work, but temperament differences may be significant.
7. Bhakoot Koota (7 Points)
What it measures: Financial prosperity, emotional bond, and family welfare after marriage.
This is calculated by the angular relationship between the boy's and girl's Moon signs. Certain combinations create what's called Bhakoot Dosha.
Problematic combinations (Bhakoot Dosha):
- 2-12 relationship (e.g., Aries boy + Pisces girl)
- 6-8 relationship (e.g., Gemini boy + Scorpio girl)
- 5-9 relationship (some traditions consider this problematic too)
Scoring:
- No dosha: 7 points
- Bhakoot Dosha present: 0 points
Note: Bhakoot Dosha is cancelled if the lords of both Moon signs are friends or if both signs are the same.
8. Nadi Koota (8 Points)
What it measures: Genetic compatibility, health of progeny, and long-term health of the couple.
Nadi is the most heavily weighted koota (8 points). All 27 nakshatras are divided into 3 Nadis:
